Safari received lots of new features in iOS 7 with one of those being a smart search field that turns the address bar into a unified smart search field. That means you can not only type in web addresses but search bookmarks, web history, Google, and find text on the page or within a PDF. Here's how:
- How to search the web using the unified smart search field
- How to search bookmarks and web history using the unified smart search field
- How to search for text on the current page using the unified smart search field
How to search the web using the unified smart search field
- Launch Safari from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.
- Tap in the smart search field in the top and type the term that you'd like to search the web for and hit Go in the lower right hand corner of your keyboard.
- That's it. A Google search page will open and show your results. If you have a different default search engine chosen for Safari, that search page will load instead.
How to search bookmarks and web history using the unified smart search field
- Launch Safari from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.
- Tap in the smart search field in the top and type the term that you'd like to search bookmarks and history for.
- Instead of hitting Go, scroll down in the results section to reveal Bookmarks and History.
- Tap on the item you'd like to visit. That's all there is to it.
How to search for text on the current page using the unified smart search field
- Launch Safari from the Home screen of your iPhone or iPad running iOS 7.
- Navigate to the address of the web page or PDF you'd like to search for a certain term on.
- Tap in the smart search field in the top and type in the term you'd like to search for.
- Instead of hitting Go, scroll down and under On This Page tap the term you'd like to search for if matches are found. If you don't see an On This Page section, there were no matches.
- Safari highlights instances of the term in yellow. Just use the bottom navigation to tab through them. Hit Done when you're finished.
That's all there is to it! That's how to use all the features in the unified smart search field. Did you know you could use the address bar for more than just typing in web addresses or were you already a pro at using Safari? Let us know in the comments!
